TR Ignite - Hear from the finalists

Thomson Reuters | 14 September, 2019

On 6 September, the legal tech community in Singapore was abuzz with excitement for one of the most anticipated events of 2019 – the TR Ignite finals.

Supported by Thomson Reuters Ventures and the Singapore Academy of Law’s Future Law Innovation Programme (FLIP), TR Ignite is an Asia Pacific-wide technology innovation investment programme aimed at early-stage startups in the legal and regulatory space.

Over a period of three weeks, more than 200 applications were received from startups across 20 countries, including China, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. The quality of the applications was extremely high, as evidenced by how nearly half progressed through to a secondary review or interview. See other TR Ignite stats here

Partnering with startups is not new for Thomson Reuters. We are always looking for innovative ways to help our customers serve their clients, and partnering with small companies or startups is one of the ways we bring new solutions to the market quickly. Globally, we do this through a startup incubator programme that runs through Thomson Reuters Labs, where select startups can benefit from a diverse group of mentors, access data and tools, customer network, investor circle, and more. TR Ignite is driven by the same motivation and goals.

As part of the competition, eight semi-finalists were invited to pitch at TechLaw.Fest, held across two days from 5-6 September. The finalists had 7 minutes to present their business and vision and respond to “shark tank” style questions posed by a judging panel of legal and technology experts and venture capitalists. Three startups emerged as finalists: Checkbox, Narus, and Resolve Disputes Online (RDO).

Following a short break, the finalists took to an open stage to pitch again in the afternoon. This time, the questions were opened up to the audience as well. The stakes were high, and after an intense round of pitching, Checkbox emerged as the overall winner, with Narus and RDO following closely as joint runners-up.
